According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community are more likely to have higher rates of substance abuse.  There are several factors that can contribute to substance use.  Here are just a few:

  • Fear.  Fear of discrimination, rejection, prejudice, and physical violence.
  • Shame.   This is especially true for those that lack support from friends and family.
  • Low self-esteem resulting from feelings of being “different” or discriminated against.
  • Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse.
  • Bullying and teasing.
