Summer is here and people are heading to the rivers and lakes with their boats, and sometimes alcohol is taken as well. Iowa law states that the blood alcohol level for boating while intoxicated (BWI) is .08 percent the same as a motor vehicle. This applies to sailboats as well as motorboats.

Everyone needs to remember that alcohol reduces reaction time and the ability to make good decisions. Operators who are intoxicated may be required to take tests to determine their sobriety. Getting charged with a BWI can result in jail time, a fine, loss of boating privileges, and are required to get a substance abuse treatment evaluation and must also attend a drinking drivers course. Anyone that refuses to be tested will be given a fine and will have their boat operating privileges suspended.

We want everyone to have fun this summer but safely!
