An exciting update in Iowa, Narcan is now offered OTC (over the counter) at many pharmacies and super stores, think Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, Hy-Vee and CVS. Narcan is a 4mg opioid overdose reversal medication in the form of a nasal spray. Narcan being OTC is making it even more convenient to pick-up and add to your first aid kit. Narcan is still available in Iowa for free through programs with IHHS, Telenaloxone- a program through IHHS and the University of Iowa, as well as community-based access at local pharmacies.

Did you know Narcan is not your only option? Kloxxado, is also available under a standing order in Iowa. A pharmacist can provide Kloxxado to a person at risk, or a person in a position to help a person at risk of an opioid overdose. Kloxxado is also part of the naloxone family, like Narcan is. Kloxxado is 8mg per device, making it ideal for a person who has many opioids in their system or when a synthetic opioid, such as fentanyl is suspected.

More exciting news to share, Sieda BHTS is now a secondary distributer of Narcan. Our agency can provide training and Narcan to those at risk or those who might find themselves in a position to assist a person who is overdosing.
